The confusion isn’t a sign that you’re bad at languages - it’s a sign that Thai has five competing romanization systems, each built for a different purpose. Why Thai Romanization Confuses Learners (and It Is Not Your Fault)

The confusion follows a predictable pattern. You start with a textbook that uses RTGS - the official Thai romanization used on road signs - and build your first mental map of Thai sounds from that. Then you download an app that uses Paiboon+, with small diacritics above the vowels. Then you find a YouTube channel using informal phonetic spellings that match neither. By week three, you’re holding three inconsistent systems in your head, none of them complete, and you don’t know which one to believe when they disagree.

This is not a personal failure. It happens because Thai has at least five romanization systems, and they were built for completely different purposes:

  1. RTGS (Royal Thai General System of Transcription): Thailand’s official standard, designed for road signs and government documents. No diacritics. No tone information.
  2. Paiboon+: Designed specifically for language learners. Marks all 5 tones and vowel length.
  3. IPA / Haas: Used in academic linguistics and bilingual dictionaries. Precise but not learner-friendly.
  4. ISO 11940: A technical standard for library and bibliographic cataloguing.
  5. Informal phonetics: The anything-goes spellings that show up in travel blogs, restaurant menus, and YouTube subtitles.

The problem with RTGS for learners is not that it’s wrong. For road signs, it does exactly what it was designed to do. The problem is what it leaves out. RTGS uses no diacritics, which keeps the spelling clean but strips out all tonal information.

The khao stress test makes this concrete. In RTGS, the syllable “khao” is the correct spelling for at least four completely different Thai words:

Same RTGS spelling. Four different words. Four different pronunciations. Rice and enter both carry a falling tone, but their vowel lengths differ - Paiboon+ shows that too. If you learn “khao” from RTGS without any further information, you can’t know which of these four words is being used, or how to say any of them correctly.

Of the common systems, only Paiboon+ and the academic IPA/Haas system mark both tones and vowel length. Haas uses specialized phonetic symbols that take considerable time to learn. What Paiboon+ Does That No Other Common System Does

Three features separate Paiboon+ from every other common Thai romanization for learners.

Feature 1: It’s phonemic - one unique spelling per word.

Two words that sound different are spelled differently. Always. This is what “phonemic” means in practice: if you see a Paiboon+ spelling, there’s exactly one correct way to say it.

RTGS is not phonemic. As the stress test showed, “khao” covers rice, news, he/she, and enter - four words, one spelling, zero tonal information. Paiboon+ gives each its own unique spelling. The pronunciation is inside the word, not hidden behind context you may not have.

Feature 2: It marks all 5 tones with diacritics.

Thai has 5 tones. Paiboon+ marks all five with a diacritic placed on the main vowel. The full set is compact enough to memorize in one session:

The mid tone (no mark) is your baseline - a flat, neutral pitch. Work outward from there. Low sits below mid. Falling starts above mid and drops. Rising climbs from below mid. High sits flat above mid.

The clearest way to see the system in action is a three-word set that shares the same consonant and vowel. The word มา (maa, no mark) means “to come” - flat, neutral pitch, hold the aa for two beats. Add a rising diacritic and you get ม้า (máa), “horse.” Add a high diacritic and you get หมา (mǎa), “dog.” Same consonants, same long aa vowel, three completely different words distinguished only by the tone mark.

That’s the system. Spot the diacritic on the vowel, identify the tone, and you know how the pitch should move.

Feature 3: It marks vowel length by doubling the vowel letter.

Thai distinguishes short and long vowels - they change meaning. Paiboon+ handles this with a single rule: one vowel letter = short (one beat), doubled vowel letter = long (two beats).

Take the khao set again. The word เข้า (enter) is khâo in Paiboon+ - falling tone, with a short ‘o’ at the end. The word ข้าว (rice) is khâao - also falling tone, but the ‘aa’ is doubled to show the long vowel. Same tone, different length, different word. The extra letter doesn’t add a new sound; it extends the one that’s already there.

How to Read Paiboon+ in Practice

Here’s how to decode any Paiboon+ word you haven’t seen before. Four steps.

Here is what each step looks like with real A1 words from Phuut’s vocabulary.

For maa: consonant m, no diacritic on the doubled aa, open syllable. Mid tone, long aa vowel. Say it flat and held - two beats on the aa.

For phûut: consonant ph (aspirated p), the tone mark is û (falling diacritic sitting on the uu vowel), doubled uu for length, final t. Falling tone, long uu. Start the pitch above mid and let it drop.

Two consonants that consistently trip up beginners:

bp: The Thai consonant ป. It’s an unaspirated stop, sitting between the voiced English “b” and the aspirated English “p.” Don’t voice it like a standard English b - it’s softer than that but not breathed out either. The word bpai (to go) opens with this sound.

dt: The Thai consonant ด. An unaspirated stop at the dental position, between English “d” and “t.” The word dtua (body/self) opens with this sound. Same principle as bp: no voicing, no aspiration.

One position that does not exist in English:

Thai uses ng (the sound at the end of “singing”) as a syllable-initial consonant. English never does this. The word ngaan (งาน, work or event) opens with that ng sound. It feels awkward at first and becomes natural after a week of practice.

Two vowel sounds English speakers find unfamiliar:

eu / ue: An unrounded back vowel. It appears in words like seua (เสื้อ, shirt). Similar to the vowel in the French “eu” or German “ü” without the lip rounding.

oe: A mid-central vowel, close to a schwa. Less frequent at A1 but appears regularly at B1 and above.

The one reading error worth naming directly:

The single most common mistake in early Paiboon+ reading is confusing low tone (à) and falling tone (â). They look similar - one grave accent versus one circumflex - and both involve “going down” in some intuitive sense. That’s the trap.

Low tone in Thai is a flat pitch parked below the mid baseline. It doesn’t move. Falling tone starts above mid and descends. Both feel “downward” to a new learner, but the movements are completely different: one is stationary and the other is a drop.

When you see à, think “parked low.” When you see â, think “sliding down from high.” Practice them back-to-back on the same vowel - khào (low) then khâao (falling) then back, over and over - until the difference is physical, not just intellectual.
